Refining and Types of Furnaces

There are three different outputs of resources when smelting Iron ore within either a Bloomery or Crucible Furnace:

- Hot Cast Iron (Mainly used for Armour)

- Hot Steel (Mainly used for Weapons

- Slag (Waste Product, can be recycled in Crucible Furnace)

There are two different types of furnaces that can be used for refining, these are the Bloomery, and the Crucible Furnace

Bloomery

To create a bloomery, create two pieces of Hard Clay in a Crafting table (Which takes 8 terracotta each)

To use it, place iron ore in the top slot, and place Coal/Charcoal in the middle slot. Each Iron Ore takes one coal/charcoal to process

The bloomery can be heated up by using Bellows to increase the chance of getting a certain product. To use the Bellows, right click the bottom half of the Bloomery while having it in your hand, a bar should appear above the bloomery which displays your current temperature.

Each Product has an optimal temperature range, and these are:

Slag: Higher temperatures, specifically when the temperature coefficient is above 0.9.

Steel: Moderate temperatures, specifically when the temperature coefficient is between 0.7 and 0.9.

Cast Iron: Lower temperatures, specifically when the temperature coefficient is below 0.7.

Temperature coefficient is the percentage on the bar above the bloomery, so 0.9 is above 90% heat for example.

To obtain any resources out of the Bloomery, right click it with a pair of empty tongs, then right click again on the top of any other block. This should place a ball of molten stuff on top of the block.

Proceed to hold right click on it while holding a hammer until the ball dissapears. The products should drop around you on the ground or into your inventory.

Steel and cast iron can be placed in tongs and used by being thrown into a fire, then right clicking it with a pair of empty tongs (Heating up Cast Iron/Steel)

Crucible Furnace

To place a crucible furnace, you must have the “True Smithing” skill, on the top of the Mining section of the profession tree, to create it, place one Clay block on top of a Blast Furnace, and right click the bottom block with a Hammer

Disclaimer: You need craft both a Crucible and an Ingot Cast

The Crucible Furnace has two input slots (on the left), and 3 output slots (on the right), there is also a “Clear furnace” button on the bottom right

To use it, place iron ore or Slag in the top-left input slot and coal/charcoal below the iron ore. Each Iron ore/Slag creates a certain amount of molten metal within the GUI of the Crucible Furnace.

How to extract products from the crucible furnace:

1. Place a crucible in the world, then right click it with a pair of tongs.

2. Place the tongs with the crucible into any of the output slots and wait (there must be at least 1.0 molten metal to extract an ingot)

3. take out the filled out crucible and place down an Ingot Cast in the world

4. right click the ingot cast with the tongs, and wait

5. Get a new pair of tongs, then right click the ingot cast

You should then be left with a piece of Hot Steel/ Hot Cast Iron in your tongs which you can use for smithing, or quench in a cauldron to create a solid piece of Steel/ Cast Iron

Any molten slag extracted from the Crucible Furnace becomes Cast Iron when placed inside the Ingot Mold
